The empire strikes back, in the fight between ultra long haul and shorter point to point airline travel argument the newly minted 787 shows it’s colours.
The long awaited and overdue aircraft finally took to the skies on December the 15th. While wowing the crowds who stood out in cloudy weather to see the spectacle the real questions needing answers go beyond the assembly of another good plane more fuel efficient than the last.
From initial reports hot off the press some care and attention has been paid to concerns about well being, however reports that this mould breaking aircraft will affect the experience of jet lag are exaggerated in the opinion of this writer.
While adding lighting which mimic destination time attempts to adjust the passenger quickly to the new time zone,this is really only half the story. If jet lag were only about light we’d all be light box junkies by now.
The truth of the matter is that business focus is squarely fixed in the job off dragging the airline industry out of it’s dip in the middle of the ressesion. We may have a long time to wait before a serious look is taken to address the causes and cures for jet lag.
The current slew of jet lag cures raises false hope in the media and keeps the public waiting for the next media frenzy without even considering the argument in detail. The absurdity that impotence drugs are the cure all is a reciepe for disaster – and sexist! unless women decide to grow penises just to get over jet lag.
Previous attempts by the House of Lords Select Committe to explore the landscape and possible solutions are a step in the right direction but the political will within the airline industry is lacking.
So until such times when the dust of the recession settles the boys and girls at Boeing can rub their hands in glee over their new toy.
Some good news for the beleaguered Governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford.
Sanford rose to infamy for deserting his constituency for 6 days for the arms of his mistress in Argentina. While currently waiting for impeachment proceedings against him in the State Legislature Sanford has won a small victory with the State Ethics Commission.
Stanford is charged with 37 counts of misconduct while holding the office of State Governor. Twenty eight of those charges have been dropped, 18 of the charges relate to flight upgrades given while on state business.
The rationale implied is that it’s okay to upgrade (provided someone else is paying) if it means arriving refreshed and ready for business while minimising the dreaded jet lag. Isn’t that a line of reasoning every long haul frequent flier can relate to? While Sanford is excused from all but 9 of his misdemeanors we will have to wait and see if those who wish to impeach him get their way.
The question in my mind is now the days of involuntary upgrades are hard to come by, what responsible steps is Business taking to make sure its henchmen arrive ready for business? Or should we follow the Ethics Commission’s lead and reach for the company expense credit card next time?

Anyone who has attended clinic with a therapist or doctor will be familiar with the following scenario: -
You have a health problem or challenge and set off to find a solution in a doctor’s surgery or a complementary therapist. They give you a solution and you’re motivated to take action, but somewhere along the way you loose motivation and stop doing the very thing that will ease the pain and solve the problem. Now there are exceptions to this of course – for instance if the situation is life threatening the motivation runs deeper and the action is easier to take. However when the situation is not of that magnitude why is it that we find it so hard to consistently take action in the direction of better health?
Unfortunately this problem shows up in Nutritional Therapy when it comes to Supplementation. Maybe because of the preventative nature of the therapy the significance of the therapy is overlooked or looses it urgency over time; because we aren’t in immediate pain the compulsion to act isn’t always imminent.
In medical circles this is known as Noncompliance. Noncompliance can be the difference between healing and experiencing better health or a deteriorating health picture. As a nutritional therapist Noncompliance is one of the more frequent challenges I face when working with clients. As well as dispensing informed nutritional knowledge one of my roles is to make sure adequate nutrition gets into the client period. If this doesn’t happen everything else counts for nothing. Supplementation is an important tool in my trade and the risk of Noncompliance can stop progress in its tracks.
