The Problem of Acclimatizing

In 1956 during the Cold War, US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles arrived back in Washington after a long flight to learn Egypt had bought Russian weapons. Dulles immediately cancelled the agreement with Egypt’s Colonel Nasser to fund the Aswan Dam Project – further escalating the Suez Crisis.

      • Years later Dulles admitted he made a mistake in acting so hastily. He blamed it on the effects of Jet Lag.
      • Not quite as dramatic – President George W Bush on a state visit to China blamed jet lag when he couldn’t find the right door to exit the stage.

Fatigue and the inability to acclimatize are some of the most common effects of flying. Many a decision has been blamed on these culprits from political decisions to lost business deals and sports team performances.
